Haflong July 23 : Patients in Dima Hasao district of Assam are forced to go to other districts for treatment as the Haflong civil hospital does not have adequate facilities.
The only 100-bed government hospital in the district, which was established in 1979 to provide proper medical care, has 20 doctors, including general surgeons, but specialist surgeons, including neurologists, urologists, orthopaedics, were never appointed.According to the hospital authorities, there is shortage of four doctors, 40 nurses and 10 ward boys in the hospital.
The pathetic condition of the hospital came to light on Thursday night when Runa Debbarma, 22, an employee of Haflong bakery here, was hit by a car and shifted to the hospital around 8.45pm.A doctor on emergency duty referred Debbarma to Nittananda Naiding, a general surgeon of the hospital, and left though the patient was writhing in pain because of severe head and lungs injuries.
When this correspondent approached the duty nurse to call the referred doctor, she asked the attendant of the patient to find him.
Naiding came around 10.30pm but he could not find syringes, catheters and other medical equipment.After initial treatment, Debbarma was referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.”We can only provide first aid to such type of injuries. We do not have any neurosurgeon in Haflong. We are helpless,” Naiding said..In 2008, New Delhi had given its nod for a trauma centre to be built on the civil hospital campus.
The building was set up in 2013 at a cost of Rs 65 lakh but the centre has not be started till date.The Haflong civil hospital runs a blood bank in the building.The hospital had purchased a harmonic scalpel machine worth Rs 32 lakh in 2013 to facilitate operations but sources said it has not been used till date.
